M 231 – Small Faraday Cup (3-3/8″ Inside Diameter)

Overview:

The Model 231 Faraday Cup measures charge on materials, devices and assemblies when used in conjunction with the ETS M 230 or equivalent nanocoulomb meters. The Faraday cup and nano coulombmeter work together to precisely measure the electrostatic charge on an object, especially at very low levels. Here’s how they work in tandem:

1. Faraday Cup’s Role:

  • Acts as a shielded enclosure: The Faraday cup is typically a metal container that blocks external electric fields. This ensures the measurement isn’t influenced by stray charges in the environment.
  • Captures the Charge: When a charged object is placed inside the Faraday cup, the object’s charge transfers to the inner surface of the cup. This effectively isolates the charge from the surroundings.

2. Nano Coulombmeter’s Role:

  • Detects the Transferred Charge: The nano coulombmeter is a highly sensitive instrument specifically designed to measure minute electrical charges. It connects to the Faraday cup.
  • Quantifies the Charge: When the charge transfers from the object to the Faraday cup, it creates a small current that flows through the cup and into the nano coulombmeter. The meter detects and measures this current.
  • Displays the Measurement: The nano coulombmeter then converts the measured current into a corresponding charge value and displays it on its readout. This value represents the total electrostatic charge that was originally on the object.

Benefits of using a Faraday cup with a nano coulombmeter:

  • Accuracy: The Faraday cup shields the measurement from external interference, leading to a more accurate reading of the object’s true charge.
  • Versatility: Different sizes of Faraday cups can be used with the same nano coulombmeter to accommodate objects of varying dimensions.
  • Protection: The Faraday cup also protects the object from ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) events during the measurement process.
