Pin-to-pin testing is a common approach for those conducting ESD testing for modern electronics. Devices from almost every facet of the electronics industry are exposed to waveforms such as the Human Body Model (HBM), Machine Model (MM), Human Metal Model (HMM), and Charged Device Model (CDM).

In 2014, ETS introduced its entry-level, microprocessor-based Model 9910 ESD simulator.  This ESD simulator provides convenient, singular integration of all four models (HBM, MM, HMM, and CDM) in one base unit that is ideally suited for testing low pin-count devices.

Historically, the only entry-level solutions available were manual, two-probe systems requiring an operator to attach and detach probes to desired pin locations. This work is very time consuming–particularly with higher pin-count devices–and automated solutions are often prohibitively expensive.

One alternative is to hire an external testing lab that owns multiple units and charges $5,000-15,000 per part. In addition to the expense, though, this method requires long lead times. This is especially inconvenient in the instance of a failure, as manufacturers receive negative results and are then obligated for another round of testing to ensure their solution properly addresses the failure.

In the fall of 2016, ETS will introduce its newly upgraded version of the Model 9910 with Automated PinScan® as a both a complete system and a modular upgrade to existing 9910 units.   This unit will provide an economical new way to achieve multi-pin analysis by fully automating two-pin testing and allow for testing devices up to 128 pins.  The system will also be fully operable by a LabVIEW-based software, giving customers a hands free solution.
